Ecotourism Australia
Ecotourism Australia (EA) is a not for profit, membership-based organisation focused on inspiring environmentally sustainable and culturally responsible tourism. It designs and delivers certification programs for tourism products, representing more than 500 operators and 1,600 products (tours, attractions and accommodations) across Australia.
EA is committed to helping tourism operations become environmentally sustainable, economically viable and socially and culturally responsible. EA works closely with diverse industry partners and stakeholders including ecotourism operators; protected area managers and other government agencies; local and regional tourism associations; tourism, environmental, interpretation and training consultants; tourism planners; academics; students and travellers.
Formed in 1991 as the first national ecotourism body in the world, EA has made a significant contribution to environmental sustainability in Australia through its ground-breaking certification programs, including:
- ECO Certification
- Respecting Our Culture Certification
- Climate Action Certification
- EcoGuide Certification
- Destination Certification
Now in its 28th year, EA is having an increasing impact on sustainability at the global level. In 2015, EA’s ECO Certification program became one of the first tourism certification programs in the world to gain Global Sustainable Tourism Council-Approved status (now Accredited), demonstrating that it meets global best practice sustainable tourism criteria. EA has MOUs with UNWTO, UNESCO, the Ministry of Tourism of the Kingdom of Cambodia, the Taiwan Ecotourism Association, and the Vanuatu Department of Tourism and The University of Queensland, among others.
